Ven III, The poisoned grain, and Argent Moon. Because ONi did try to do exactly that, they engineered the Sangheili civil war for their own ends, and then horrifically unethical bio-weapons not once, not twice, but three. Going back and reading Glasslands with the benefit of hindsight, he was exactly right when he challenged Thel's assertions and said Humanity would just come and finish them all off the second they got the chance. Our new villain actually believes their own brainless rhetoric even when it's patently obvious to everyone else how wrong they are. Jul knows the Forerunner worship is bullshit, but he's using it as a means to an end. In fact the whole Created thing is literally as polar opposite to this as you can get. Halo has a real hard time making villains like this, Jul and Truth are the only ones where they got this right. Because it's in service of a greater goal.

He's not a deluded zealot, he sees through all the smoke and mirrors of the Covenant's "faith", but he knows it's a useful tool, so he keeps it around and plays the part, even knowing he's full of shit as he does. 343i's approach to Halo seems to be to push "look at how cool humanity is, look how awesome we are post-war", but Jul's a man who saw past everything and viewed humanity for what they really were. I'd argue he was an important counter-balance for the setting. So I've rambled on long enough, what are your thoughts on Jul? I don't really know how he's regarded in the fandom at large, is there something I'm missing? Is he actually a terrible character? Why is everything Karen Traviss's fault? Whatever it is you have to say, I'd like to hear it. All of that interesting characterization just got pushed to the sidelines because fire team majestic needed a bad guy to fight. Seeing him him Halo 4 was somewhat bittersweet, as he was kind of demoted to a run of the mill antagonist. That's a LOT more than alien characters normally get. He was his own character with his own beliefs, motives, and conflicts both external and internal. He wasn't just a one dimensional villain, and he wasn't just a good guy elite like Thel 'Vadam. I was really disappointed to learn this because Jul was one of my favorite characters in the Kilo 5 books, in fact he's probably one of my favorite Halo characters period. Alright so it's been a while since I've read the Kilo 5 trilogy, and I haven't actually played Halo 5, but I'm aware he was rather unceremoniously killed off near the start of the game.
